School Procedures

  • ATTENDANCE

    • Regular attendance is very important to school progress and is required by Utah State Law. Children should be in school every day except in cases of severe illness or emergency.  If your child must be out of school, please call the office by 8:30 am at 801-481-4819.If parents know beforehand that their child(ren) will be absent, they should notify the office and contact the teacher so that homework can be arranged.  Homework must be submitted within 5 (five)days after returning to school.  If a parent has not notified the office of the reason for the absence, they should send a note with their child upon their return to school.  Whenever possible, please schedule appointments with doctors, dentist, etc. outside of school hours.  Parents are required to come to the office to sign their child out of school prior to picking students up early.  If a child leaves and then returns, they should be signed back up upon return.
  • If your student is late to school, please make sure your student stops by the office to check in and get a late slip to take to their teacher. If a student has been marked absent by the teacher and does not stop by the office for a late slip, they will be shown as “unexcused absent” for the day.

    Documents:

  • Please stop by the office with your photo I.D to sign out your student. The office staff will call your student’s classroom and have your student sent to the office to meet you.

  • Parents need to inform the office if you will be withdrawing your student from school.  The office will give your student’s teacher a Student Withdrawal Form which your student will take to the library, cafeteria, music teachers, etc. to make sure books have been turned in, cafeteria fees cleared, musical instruments returned, etc.

  • A school staff member who is trained in basic first aid will manage illness or injury to a student while at school. Minor injuries will be given first aid in the school. If possible, the student will return to class when indicated. The office staff will assist the student with a telephone call to the parent if necessary. Parents will be notified with a telephone call in cases of illness or more serious injuries. If the medical situation is an emergency, the school staff will call 9-1-1.

It is very important that the emergency contacts on your registration card are kept up-to-date, including telephone numbers and names of family and friends that would be available to pick up your student in the event the parent or guardian is not available.

  • Emergency Release of Students

Release of students in grades K-8, other than the regularly scheduled hours, is prohibited unless a parent/guardian or another authorized responsible person has been notified and has assumed responsibility for the child. Students in grades 9-12 may be released without such notification if the Principal or designee determines that the child is reasonably responsible and notification is not practical.

    ·       The Principal will contact the Superintendent/designee for authorization to cancel school or close school early.

    ·       When a decision is made, the Principal will notify their Network Director and the District Executive Director of Communications and Community Relations.

    ·       The Principal will determine and communicate the pick-up point or alternate pick up point for bus drivers and parents/guardians. The Principal will relay this information as soon as possible to the Transportation Manager.

    ·       The Principal will notify Network Directors Services to arrange for bus transportation and Food Service support as needed.

    ·       If cancellation or closure is approved, the Principal will initiate the School Messenger plan to contact as many parents and authorized guardians as possible using email, robocall, text alert, etc., and the school calling tree. Principal will work with the Executive Director of Communications to determine whether social media and/or the school or district website should also be used to communicate.

  • ELECTRONIC AND PERSONAL ITEMS

Salt Lake City School District is not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen personal belonging brought to school.  Personal digital media devices include all electronic communication and entertainment devices, i.e., phones, watches, cameras, music players, video players, iPods, mp3 players, computers, iPads, etc. should not be brought to school.  However, in the case where a parent deems it necessary for their child to have a phone or watch for after school contact, parents and students must sign a contract/liability waiver form each year.  Phones and watches must be turned off and kept in lockers during school hours.  If a student prefers, the teacher may hold in in a secure place until the end of the school day.  Students may not use devices during the day.  If a student needs to contact a parent, they may get permission from the teacher and call from a school phone.  Please do not text or call your students during the school day. If you need a message communicated to your children, call the office and we will get the information to them. Items that are confiscated will need to be picked up by a parent.  Toys such as trading cards, board or card games, money and pets are not to be brought to school unless requested by a teacher or for a special activity.  The following should not be brought to school:  Sports Equipment, such as hard balls or bats, basketballs, soccer balls, footballs; grooming aids such as makeup, perfume, nail polish, hair spray, and weapons or facsimiles of weapons such as knives, firearms, matches, guns, darts, bullets, arrows, caps, firecrackers, and stars are prohibited.
