Counseling Center
Emerson Elementary School Counseling Program
At Emerson Elementary, our school counseling program strives to support every student’s academic, social, and emotional growth. Throughout the year, I will visit classrooms to deliver lessons, facilitate group activities, and provide individual support. Our goal is to equip students with the strategies and experiences they need to thrive both in school and in life.
Zones of Regulation
One key resource we use is the Zones of Regulation, which helps students recognize and manage their emotions. We believe that all feelings are valid, and our focus is on teaching respectful, responsible, and safe ways to express them. By understanding and practicing self-regulation, students learn to handle their emotions in a way that supports positive learning and healthy relationships.
The Four Zones
- Blue Zone: Describes low states of alertness (e.g., sad, tired, bored).
- Green Zone: Describes a calm, focused state (e.g., happy, ready to learn). This zone supports optimal learning.
- Yellow Zone: Describes a heightened state of alertness where emotions are elevated but still within control (e.g., anxious, excited, silly).
- Red Zone: Describes an extremely heightened state with intense emotions (e.g., anger, terror). Students in the Red Zone may feel “out of control.”
Through consistent practice with the Zones of Regulation, our students develop awareness of their emotions and learn skills to communicate and regulate them effectively.
